Connemara Ponies

The Connemara Pony is considered Ireland's only native breed. The history of how the Connemara breed came to be is surrounded in mystery; however the most widely accepted story is that in the 16th century a Spanish armada crashed off the shores of Ireland. The horses that were on the ship are rumored to have swum to shore, and bred with the native ponies of Ireland.

Although originating in Ireland, these ponies have since been exported to many countries adapting to the vast climate difference as well as many different disciplines. While many my consider a "pony breed" suitable only to children, these hardy ponies not only cater to the younger generation but also the older. The Connemara is the largest of the pony breeds ranging from 13 to 15 hands high. They have wonderful dispositions and show great adaptability to any discipline they are put to. Whether it is jumping, dressage, driving, western pleasure, pony club, or therapeutic riding, the Connemara pony has strength, courage and trust through it all, proving that Connemaras really can do it all.
